What the Experts Say

Don't believe me. Read about what the experts say  Key Findings/Additional Resources A study of adolescent athletes found that modeling via role-models significantly increased self-efficacy and flow state . Personalize It role model

Looking back over my life, whether between the lines of a tennis court or in the rooms of recovery, I realize now how profoundly I was influenced by the people around me. My role models weren’t always the ones giving winning speeches or wowing the room behind podiums. They were often the quiet ones, struggling emotionally in various ways, yet somehow pushing through, holding it together through all the pressure and change. I felt little connection to the ones who made it look easy, for that was so not my experience. I sought out the ones who’d been through some things, who’d suffered a bit, for that’s where I always seemed to be, going through things. It was the players and peers who were candid about their struggles, who had the courage to tell the truth about themselves, inspiring me to begin telling the truth about myself. Growing up, as with most young boys, my father was my first role model. Yet I had a complex relationship with my Dad. He drank. A lot. Not exactly the behav...

Role Model in Tennis Essay

The Role Model in Tennis If you’re an aspiring tennis player looking for a role model, you’ve come to the right sport. Tennis, with its global reach and generations of icons, offers an embarrassment of riches. Every player’s persona is an extension of those who came before them, tennis’ version of natural selection, each generation adopting the effective traits of the past, all while adding their own personal mutations. Whether it’s the style, fashion, technique, or grit of today’s professionals, or closer to home, with who first placed a racquet in your hand or the mentor at your local club who showed you the way, role models are everywhere in tennis, the living curriculum of our sport. From the very beginning, we imitate before we innovate. It’s the tennis blockchain; everything is added onto the foundation before. Whether it’s the grace of Federer, the grit of Nadal, the style of Agassi, or the calm of Sampras, we study, emulate, and then adapt—absorbing what resonates deeply...

Role Model Section 2

Role Model Section 2   Role Model and You. 1)How to Find A Role Model A role model is someone you admire and look up to. They can be anybody: a celebrity, a friend, a family member, or even someone you don’t know. What is advantageous about having role models (you can have as many as you like) is that they can provide much-needed motivation, inspiration, and support on the long, often stressful journey that is competitive tennis. When choosing a role model, it’s essential to find someone who shares your values and beliefs. This way, you can be sure that you’re modeling yourself to someone aligned with the same principles you embody. It’s also essential, though not mandatory, to choose a role model successful in the field you want to be successful in, and for our purposes, that field is competitive tennis. Once you’ve found your role model, there are several ways to stay current with them. You can follow them on social media, watch and study their matches religiously, learn as much ...

Role Model In Society

The year was 1993. The moment—a thirty-second Nike commercial directed by Spike Lee—featuring NBA superstar Charles Barkley. Barkley was the reigning league MVP, dominating not just on the court but also the evening news, thanks to a string of embarrassing off-court incidents. A little humility and a promise to do better might have quieted his critics. But not the Chuckster. Instead, he double-dribbled down. On camera, Barkley declared, “I’m not a role model. I’m not paid to be a role model. I’m paid to wreak havoc on the basketball court. Parents should be role models. Just because I dunk a basketball doesn’t mean I should raise your kids.” Red herring aside—no sane person was asking Charles Barkley to raise their children—the commercial ignited a cultural firestorm, sparking a debate that still lingers to this day. What responsibilities do athletes bear in society, what is reasonable to expect of our public figures, and most importantly, precisely what does it mean to be a role...
