FBTL/UTR Competition Event Overview

Event Basics

  • Event Length: 5 hours

  • Participants: 20 players

  • Fee: $100 per player

  • Courts Required: Minimum 6 (optimal 10–12)

  • Extras: Lunch, drinks, merch, prizes

  • Offer: Players receive access to FBTL platform for the week leading up to the event...Matches count for UTR rankings


Event Schedule and Structure

12:00 PM — Welcome & Orientation

  • Meet & Greet

  • Play a professionally produced 2–3 minute “What is FBTL?” video

    • Featuring: Key contributors and a welcome message (e.g., Pat McEnroe)

  • Address Players First

    • Tournament Director (TD) delivers intro using pre-written script

    • Handouts provided to players and parents (downloadable or printed)

Handout 1: Preparing to Compete

  • Today’s Focus: Your mindset matters

  • Checklist:

    • Attitude

    • Effort

    • Preparation

    • Perspective

    • Goals


Pre-Match Player Guidance

  • Daily Check-Ins

    • Establish morning routines: Meditation, journaling, mantras, mindfulness, etc.

  • Emotion Racket

    • Identify your emotional state

    • Learn how to manage and regulate for performance

  • Pep Talk Series

    • Tools for handling slumps, nerves, comebacks, and more

    • Includes insights from pro players

  • Goal: Reach your ideal performance state (aka Flow)

Players head out to warm up while parents remain for their session.


Parent Session #1 – “The Player’s Box”

  • Watch FBTL Tennis Parent video

    • Covers: Emotional impact, parenting roles, post-match etiquette, and more

  • Parent Themes:

    • Understand what your child is going through

    • Meet your child where they are developmentally

    • Follow the “10-Minute Rule” post-match: delay critical feedback


12:25 PM — Set Up Matches

  • 3 total matches, each 1 hour long

  • 12:30 PMMatch 1 begins


1:30 PM — Cool Down & Regroup

  • Players hydrate, snack, and decompress (5–10 min buffer)

  • Parents reminded to:

    • Pause before reacting

    • Use: “Is it accurate? Necessary? Kind?” before speaking

  • 1:45 PM — Group Regather

    • Share observations

    • Discuss Managing Emotions in Competition


1:55 PM — Match 2 Begins

  • Theme Check-In:

    • Emotional management between matches

    • Tools: Emotion Racket, Pep Talks, Self-reflection

  • Players sent out


2:00 PM — Parent Session #2

  • Topic: Parental Identification

    • Kids compete for love and approval

  • Watch: Parenting Styles video (e.g., Panther, Stat Tracker, Social Butterfly)

  • Discuss emotional coping tools for watching your child compete


3:00 PM — Cool Down & Discussion

  • 3:10 PM — Talk with players

    • Focus on perspective and process

    • Reinforce: Tennis is up and down—learn from all outcomes


3:30 PM — Final Match Begins

  • Parents’ Final Session:

    • Watch: Pro Player + Parent Tribute Video (e.g., Tracy Austin)

    • Theme: Acknowledge sacrifice, honor their commitment

    • “You are the unsung heroes of this sport.”


4:30 PM — Closing Ceremony

  • Players receive merch bags and food

  • Watch a closing message from a famous pro (live or recorded)

    • Congratulating players, offering perspective and encouragement


5:00 PM — Wrap-Up & Prizes

  • Raffle: One winner receives a free 1-year FBTL subscription

  • Discount codes for all others to subscribe
